HG Solution is moving forward with its growing involvement in mercury related projects in Malaysia and around the world. Our objectives are to ensure a safe working environment and to minimize to as low as reasonably possible any cross contamination when dealing with mercury or its compounds.

 

Mercury Assessment, Monitoring and Baseline Study

WHAT IS IT?

Mercury mapping and assessment study is a structured method to detect the presence of mercury or its compounds (laboratory analysis) within the process lines of a certain facility. Using this method, the distribution, concentration and speciation of mercury can accurately be projected without the need to interfere with day to day production activities.

HOW IT'S DONE?

We determine critical representative sampling points (bleed points) for a wide range of facilities. This includes offshore installation platforms down to downstream petrochemical plants. We then perform an analysis to determine the speciation i.e. types of mercury, and compute the total mercury concentration present strictly adhering to internationally recognized standards and protocols.

Utilizing state of the art mercury analysis equipment, we deliver highly accurate results in all our undertaking tasks. By doing so, potential mercury accumulation and distribution patterns in oil and gas processing facilities as well as other relevant industries can be reliably projected.

WHY MAPPING?

The ability to accurately project its accumulation and distribution pattern will certainly assist you to judiciously arrange the necessary HSE preparation to protect your workers from the hazards of mercury. Pro-active measures can also be taken to protect all sensitive equipment that may be damaged due to amalgamation such as aluminum heat exchangers (better known as “Cold Box”). Besides that, the effectiveness of any adsorbent or catalyst used in mercury removal unit (MRU) can also be determined with this study.

 

Full (complete removal) & surface (temporary handling) Surface Decontamination for Tools and Equipment

Mercury is known for its ability to amalgamate and form a liquid metal solution with precious metals. It is also believed that mercury can react with alloying constituents of contaminated metals and remain within the metal structure itself. Sensitizing of the inter-metallic compounds during heat application can somewhat affect the structural integrity of the based metals. If the alloying elements are not susceptible for sensitization, amalgamated mercury will tend to remain within the grain boundaries of the contacted metal itself thus, proper decontamination is required to ensure imminent mercury exposure is extensively minimized. Current mercury decontamination work conducted using decontamination chemical can only temporarily suppress and stabilize mercury on the surface. Whenever decontaminated items are exposed to heat, mercury can easily surface out and vaporize. Therefore, handling of these exposed decontaminated items will not give absolute guarantee that one who does the handling is "free" form mercury poisoning hazard.

Better Place

At HG Solution, we have the ability to perform surface decontamination. With our in-house expertise, we have locally formulated a "state of the art" decontamination chemical, HGS308, which is proven to efficiently suppress the level of mercury vapor thus allowing temporary safe handling of contaminated items. HGS308 is a surfactant based chemical, which makes the cleaning more effective and can be also used to perform decontamination on "contaminated" personnel.

For a "complete" solution, HG Solution is testing a pilot system to fully decontaminate mercury contaminated items, tools or equipment. With the environmental friendly approach, contaminated items or equipment will be treated in a manner that all mercury trapped within grain boundary of materials will be vaporized without affecting the materials structural integrity. Materials treatment process will be monitored strictly adhere to the Department of Environment (DOE) requirement and certificate of fitness will be produced for each treated items. The treated item can therefore be reused again, reconditioned or resold for a value.

 

Awareness training in areas related to mercury, waste management and other toxic chemicals

As a company specialized in mercury and other contaminants, HG Solution provides mercury awareness training and comprehensive training for “Mercury Hazmat Teams”.

The training provided covers Basic Mercury Awareness Training for any personnel or crew involved in operation, turnaround and the daily maintenance of process equipment that has been identified to have possible mercury accumulation. Comprehensive training with hands-on practical exercise for mercury Hazmat Handling is provided for the formation of an in-house Mercury Hazmat Team to tackle day to day task also as a refresher course.

 

Laboratory Testing Analysis for Hydrocarbon and Water Samples for Mercury

With state of the art equipment for mercury analysis, we conduct mercury analysis in all types of samples such as crude, condensate, water, gas and sludge/ solid. The laboratory which is located in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor and Paka, Terengganu is in the process to procure more analysis equipment for mercury analysis.
Currently our laboratory is capable to conduct Total Mercury and Mercury Grouping (Elemental, Organic & Inorganic) for water, hydrocarbon, gas and solid (sludge, soil, sand etc) samples. Mercury speciation currently can only be conducted for condensate and gas samples. Analysis of total mercury is based UOP938 standard method and sampling is based on ASTM D6350.

HG Solution will accredit its laboratory to obtain “ISO 17025 Laboratory Accreditation” to ensure the service provided is up to international standards.

 

Supply equipment related to mercury management

At HG Solution Sdn Bhd, we also supply an array of equipment for the management and mitigation of mercury. This includes site application such as portable mercury analyzers and personal monitoring devices (for monitoring exposure levels). We also cater to the needs of laboratory applications for complex mercury analysis in water and hydrocarbon samples.

Mercury Removal Unit (MRU) Profiling Study

Mercury removal units (MRU) are used to reduce the amount of total mercury in natural gas or hydrocarbon condensate to as low as reasonably possible. From an engineering point of view, this is t ensure the amount of mercury entering the downstream plants such as gas processing and LNG plants are at a level that will not damage certain plant equipments. Apart from “self generated amalgam corrosion”, mercury attacks may cause Liquid Metal Embrittlement (LME) to most aluminum based materials. This may result in the failure of these equipments subsequently leading to the lost of millions of dollars or even human lives. With this in mind, the constant exercise to ensure any installed MRU is functioning as intended is carried out periodically.

Mercury Removal Unit


At HG Solution Sdn Bhd we use a unique approach to evaluate the performance of any installed MRU. The study can be conducted on a “live” plant without the need to interfere with major process activities. We perform “high pressure” sampling and evaluate the results onsite so that our clients get immediate results of the performance of their installed MRU. The study is done to determine whether the bed is still in optimum condition or to identify if a “breakthrough” or “channeling” has occurred. The study period may range from 4 to 7 working days, depending on the size, complexity and other critical attributes of an MRU.

Mercury Decontamination Chemical

HG Solution Sdn Bhd with its associate company COSS, has developed a chemical that suppresses mercury vapor. HGS308 is to be used during major turnaround activities such as flange breaking, valve, spool & pipe replacement and also daily maintenance activities.

The chemical was formulated from a surfactant based chemical with food grade active compound. HGS308 is most suitable for hydrocarbon cleaning and as a mercury suppressant. Apart from that, it also acts as an LEL suppressant and since it is readily biodegradable, it poses a minimal impact towards the environment especially marine life.

Rust Remover – EvapoRust

Specifically formulated to efficiently remove rust without affecting materials integrity with just by soaking, rinsing or spraying, EVAPORUST has been proven in many industrial sector as an effective water base rust remover. Formulated to be user and environmental friendly, EVAPORUST is non-toxic, no fumes released, biodegradable & environmentally safe.

Emulsifier – CX101

CX101-Emulsifier has been proven as a very effective hydrocarbon waste/ stain cleaner in Oil & Gas industries. Applied for cleaning stubborn hydrocarbon stain, CX101-Emulsifier is not like other normal degreaser for hydrocarbon spill cleaning agent that can effectively remove stain in a very short time. With just spraying to the stain followed by rinsing with water, our facilities will look like new without having to use much energy as other normal degreaser.
